The Sonicare toothbrush is extremely easy to use even though it cleans in a way that is totally different.
Before You Begin
Attaching the brush head
A-Series and E- Series:
- Align the front of the brush head with the front of the toothbrush handle. Match the bars on the brush head with the notches inside the top of the handle and slide the brush head onto the handle.
- Turn the cuff that secures the brush head to the handle clockwise until it's firmly tightened. If the brush head rattles when in use, tighten the cuff around the brush head base slightly.
ProResults:
- Simply align front of brush head with front of brush handle and push to secure.
Charging the battery
A 2-minute brushing can be obtained after just 1 hour of charging time, so you may start using your Sonicare almost immediately. However, to ensure your Sonicare batteries are fully charged, it is recommended you keep your Sonicare in the charger during the first few days of use. And because you cannot overcharge your Sonicare toothbrush, feel free to store your Sonicare toothbrush in the charger base, plugged in, when not in use for maximum battery life (although the brush will retain a charge for about 14 days of normal use without charging).
Proper Brushing Technique
- Rinse & apply toothpaste
First, put the bristles under running water for a few seconds to moisten. Then apply your favorite toothpaste. To avoid toothpaste splatter, place the brush head in your mouth before you press the power button.
- Position brush head
Place the bristles upward toward the gumline at about 45°. Be sure to adjust your brushing to use the angle to your advantage and keep as many bristles in contact with the teeth as possible. Hold the handle with a light 'finger-tip' grip and turn the Sonicare on.
Using light pressure, gently move the vibrating brush head in a slightly circular motion so the longer bristles are able to work themselves between your teeth. Continue to gently wiggle the brush for 2 seconds. Then glide the bristles to the next tooth and pause so you can again gently wiggle the tips of the longer bristles between your teeth. For best results, use only light pressure. Let the Sonicare toothbrush do the brushing for you. Do not scrub.
- Divide mouth into sections
Divide your mouth into four sections: outside top, inside top, outside bottom and inside bottom teeth. Begin brushing in section 1 (outside top teeth) and brush for 30 seconds before moving to section 2 (inside top teeth). Continue brushing for 30 seconds in each section progressing through all 4 sections until you've brushed for 2 minutes. If activated, the Quadpacer feature will beep every 30 seconds to signal you to move to the next quadrant. Be sure to spend equal amounts of time brushing all the surfaces of your teeth.
- Brushing time
The Smartimer™ feature automatically stops your Sonicare toothbrush after the dentist-recommended 2-minute brushing time. If at any time during brushing you momentarily stop the brush to rinse or apply more toothpaste, the Smartimer pauses its timing so that you can pick up where you left off to complete the 2-minute brushing cycle. Although the 2-minute time is recommended for optimal results, you can always stop or restart the brush at any time by pressing the power button. Whenever the handle is placed in the charger, the Smartimer automatically resets to ensure a full brushing cycle the next time you use it. The Smartimer also automatically resets itself if you stop your Sonicare toothbrush for longer than 45 seconds.
- Extra brushing time
After the 2-minute brushing cycle is complete, you may turn the brush on for another cycle and spend additional time brushing the chewing surfaces of your teeth or on places where your dental professional has instructed you to spend extra time during your oral care routine.
- Rinse mouth & bristles
Rinse your mouth with water after brushing; then rinse the bristles under running water to remove excess toothpaste after brushing. You may also brush your tongue, with the toothbrush turned on or off, as you prefer.
- Your dental professional can recommend how often you should use your Sonicare toothbrush, but generally, it can replace your manual brushing routine. It's recommended that for best results that you use your Sonicare toothbrush at least twice a day for a full 2 minutes. And remember to floss daily too.
The Unique Sonicare Sensation
Because of the way Sonicare cleans your teeth, some new users notice a tickling or tingling sensation during and after brushing when they first start using Sonicare. Rest assured, this is completely normal. This sensation is what tells you that your mouth is fresh and clean.
Until you adjust to the Sonicare clean sensation, try to apply less pressure against the teeth and gums while you brush. Remember that a Sonicare does not require as much pressure as a manual brush because so much of the cleaning power comes from the superior sonic technology.
Also, the Easy-start feature (found in all Sonicare models) will help you get accustomed to the new sensation by gently increasing power over a series of 12-14 uses (depending on model). (link to 4.3.3) You will know Easy-start is working when you hear 2 quick beeps immediately after you press the power button to signal you are getting reduced brushing power. After the first 12-14 brushings, you'll no longer hear the double beep and your Sonicare toothbrush will be at the optimal brushing power.
Note that if you have gum disease , haven't been using a power toothbrush or don't floss regularly, some tenderness in your gums may occur when you first begin to use your Sonicare. (link to 2.4.7) Be sure you're applying only light pressure to your teeth and gums. Your gums should feel less sensitive within a few days of use as your gums become healthier.
Finally, to avoid splattering, simply place the brush head in your mouth before you press the power button and keep your mouth closed while brushing. While this may feel different at first, most Sonicare owners quickly become used to brushing this way.
